Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know if I need a new roof?

The following are things that may indicate that your roof needs replacing:

    * Missing, cracked or curling shingles
    * Hailstorms have hit your roof
    * Shingle, sheathing or siding decay
    * Leakage in the attic after heavy rains
    * Stains on interior walls or ceilings
    * High energy bills which indicate poor roof ventilation

In addition, storms which have produced high winds and hail can cause hidden damage which we

typically spot during our free comprehensive roof inspection.

Q: What are some of the typical causes of roof problems?

    * Weather and Climate. Extreme weathers can expedite the deterioration of a roof. Hail, Wind, Snow and Ice can all damage your roof.
    * Flashing problems. Flashing’s are used to make the roof watertight. Improper installation and weak flashing can make the roof leak and by the time it is discovered, water damage may be too big.
    * Not enough roof maintenance done. Not checking minor roof problems can lead to a bigger problem later on. Structural damage done by any physical contact can lead to a bigger problem later on.

Q: What are common types of roofing?

    * Asphalt shingles- the most popular roofing used in America today. They can be reinforced with

either fiberglass or organic shingles with the former being more popular.

    * Metal- Several types are available like the flat locked copper. Metal roofing can be broken down

into two groups, the architectural and the structural.

Q: What’s the difference between 25-year and 30-year shingles?

30-year shingles weighs much heavier than 25-year shingles. In laminated architectural type

shingles, the 25-yr weighs between 235 and 265 pounds per100 square feet, while the 30-yr weighs

between 265 and 310 pounds per 100 square feet. Their thickened state makes the 30 year shingles

much more durable.

Q: How often should I clean my gutters?

Gutters should be cleaned at least once in the summer and twice in the fall.

Q: Can heavy snow damage my roof?

Yes! It is important to keep heavy snow off your eavesdrops and cleared out of your ridge vents.
